KUALA LUMPUR: Telekom Malaysia is offering its streamyx GradPack package, which targets college and university students, until Dec 31.

Subscribers will enjoy broadband service at a lower rate, as well as receive some free goodies, according to the telecommunications giant.

GradPack offers two Internet service packages � 384Kbps (kilobits per second) for RM50 a month or 1Mbps (megabit per second) for RM100 monthly.

The students who subscribe will get a free modem, and a streamyx Zone ID which grants them wireless access at more than 1,300 hotspots nationwide.

TM is also waiving its RM75 activation and RM88 installation fees for GradPack users.

Also, subscribers of the 1Mbps package will get access to music portal Hypptunes, video service HyppTV and the Rose Online Evolution massively multiplayer online role-playing game for three months.

In addition to that, they will get a TM�Manchester United special-edition T-shirt for free.

Students who want to subscribe to GradPack must present their student ID at any TMpoint, TMpoint Authorised Dealership (TAD) outlet, or TM authorised reseller nationwide.

If you still don't know what astroturf is, it's bogus grass roots efforts designed by corporations to present the illusion that a company policy has broad public support. Using fake consumer groups, co-opted (read: paid off) minority and disability groups and think tanks, lobbyists and PR firms are paid to create a sort of "sound wall" of bogus public applause for corporate political positions. This pseudo-grass roots support is then trotted before lawmakers and seeded in the media to suggest anti-consumer policy has consumer support.

While we're sure astroturfers and the people who pay them would describe what they do in polite terms such as "community outreach" or "blogger relations," the reality is that astroturf is unethical propaganda used to screw consumers. One of the biggest names in the telecom astroturf field is Sam Simon. Simon and his company Amplify Public Affairs (formerly "Issue Dynamics") have their fingers in a huge array of artificial consumer groups and other lobbying organizations, the majority of which are used by AT&T and Verizon to crush competition, eliminate consumer protections, and pass bad regulation.

One of the biggest tricks in Simon's and Issue Dynamics bag is to use existing, pseudo-legitimate organizations to preach cable and telco policy positions. Back in 2003 Simon reportedly paid seniors rights group the Gray Panthers to help Verizon attack Worldcom. In more recent years, everyone from minority to deaf disability groups have been given funds to preach against things like net neutrality, and for things like the elimination of price controls, or laws that legalize broadband cherry picking. Sound pro-consumer to you?

Apparently, cash for a new events center often outweighs any pesky moral pangs formed by supporting policies that are against your constituents' best interest. Simon, meanwhile, uses his connections to these groups (and his brief stint working for Ralph Nader) to help build up his artificial consumer street cred with the myriad of public affairs groups he works with (see his Bio over at Amplify Public Affairs).

With Simon being at the very heart of a decade of mega-ISP disinformation efforts, imagine our surprise to see that Simon's being given an ethics award by the United Church Of Christ. Well, perhaps more amusement than surprise, given the Church Of Christ is one of the many organizations Simon uses to put corporate words into the mouth of groups that are supposed to be protecting the downtrodden and marginalized. Interestingly, the Church is also giving an award the same day to Consumerist editor Ben Popken, we'll assume to lend legitimacy to the proceedings.

Wait. It gets better. The honor being bestowed is called the Everett C. Parker Ethics in Telecommunications Lecture, an ethics award series coordinated by a group called the Telecommunications and Research Center and the National Consumer's League (NCL). One guess who founded TRAC? Sam Simon. Guess who chaired the NCL? Sam Simon. So, in short, you have the telcom industry's biggest astroturfer, with a history of paying consumer groups to argue anti-consumer positions, essentially giving himself an ethics award.

It has Bluetooth, WAP, SMS, MMS, EMS, FM radio, and an ebook reader.Even in this small package, you'll find a music and video player. There is handwritingand voice recognition andvoice dialing. You can assign ring tones and photos for each contact. The camera / web cam is a bit of an upgrade at 2.0 mega pixels.

But, what this one doesn't have is Java (at least most of them on the market right now.) If you are dead set on having Java, then you may want to check out the i9 3G. The CECT i9 3G is a bit smaller too (though not as tiny as the KA), does contain Java, has 10 pages of new icons, and comes in red, white, and black.

Performance: Like most CECT's, the speakers on this one are loud. The finger touch is responsive and the browser is pretty quick, especially if you use Opera Mini. The screen resolution is really outstanding and it's wonderful browsing the streamyx 118 on a larger, flat screen. Frankly, I was skeptical of the real usability of a phone this small, but it holds up. Texting is better than I thought, although I do prefer to use the stylus. And, the size is nice when you want to just throw this in your pocket and High Speed Broadband nothing else.

Price: This one is attractively priced. You will usually not have any trouble finding one for under $100, even with 8GB. And, you can use any GSM sim card with this phone, including pre paid or pay as you go. This frees you up from contracts or a monthly bill if you like so that the savings over the price of thephone are more than what you save initially.

You walk, run, talk, eat, and otherwise interact without leaving the comfort of a specially designed "room". When this comes to fruition, in the next few years, I wonder if there'll be a No-Smoking section included.

While the Halo franchise has always been the stomping ground of first person shooter games, the latest installment is a departure from the norm. Halo Wars, set for release in early 2009 (February), will take the incredibly cheap internet calls story and place it firmly within the confines of real-time strategy games.

Groans and moans have echoed across the US at the announcement, it seems as though Ensemble (Halo's developer), has gone to every length possible to enable console gamers to enjoy the game. RTS (real-time strategy) games have traditionally been the hallmark of PC systems, rather than console systems. However, Ensemble has created a radically different control system, enabling the gamer to navigate complex menus with the push of a single broadband phone deal no keyboard or mouse required.

In addition, the new addition to the Halo lineup departs from traditional RTS games by not focusing exclusively on resource harvesting and management. While economy is obviously a part of the game, it is not the sole focus. Players must focus on winning battle strategy, as well as proper economics, in order to succeed.

Players will also be happy to find the addition of many more Spartans to the game, as well as new (or old, as the case may Speed Tester units. Battle rifles will not make an appearance in the game. Instead, units will rely on assault rifles and grenades to destroy the Covenant and Flood units they face. In addition, new aircraft, tanks and other units have been created that reflect the history of military development in the Halo universe.

The game is set to make history by drawing fans of the Halo series into the world of an RTS game. While non-gamers may not understand the significant difference, for hardcore gamers, it is extreme. If the developers can pull off this coup, the Halo franchise will be forever enshrined as shining example of what a popular title can accomplish with the right development. While Bungie is not the main developer of this iteration (they're lending help with the vast Halo canon but not game development), Ensemble seems more than capable of pulling off the attempt. The truth will be revealed in February 2009, when the sales of the game will stand for themselves.

The Twin Towers - Kuala Lumpur
